Founder Story
Ss-bonita was founded by Textile Designer, Samara Elms in 2020. Having studied Textile Design in the UK, Samara specialised in Rug Design, refining the discipline of hand-tufting. This was what built the success of her first business, along with a bedroom studio and DIY tufting frame, Samara began to design bespoke rugs and work to commission designing pieces for global clientele.
Since then ss-bonita’s aesthetic has been globally informed through time spent with textile artisans in Peru, the influence of sophisticated Spanish aesthetics and witnessing ceramic masters throwing pots in Morocco. Each country visited opened a window of curiosity and this journey is ultimately what led us to Nepal—a country rich in heritage and textile tradition—where ss-bonita now collaborates with some of the world’s most skilled artisans to produce its collection of luxury rugs. You can read more on our time in Nepal here…
Ss-bonita stands for ‘Samara, Sean, Bonita’ her own name along the names of her two parents, this brand is a homage to her parents un-wavering love and support that made this and so many other things in her life possible.
Our mission
Our mission here is to re-shape the culture of quick consumerism. We champion slow, thoughtful designs made at the highest quality so it can last you not just your lifetime but beyond. We believe in traditional textile techniques and are determined to uphold the importance of human creativity and expression through ones own hand. Each piece we sell is well considered, unique and designed intentionally to become a piece of art within your home.
We work closely with our manufacturers and endeavour to support the communities often overlooked in the conversation around art.
Ss-bonita is now based in Sydney, Australia. Our goal is to thoughtfully produce vibrant, against the grain designs, woven to last and sustainably support the communities that help us bring them to you. We’re so glad you’ve come to join the journey…
